Understanding Neck Pain

Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain affects a significant portion of the population. Understanding the underlying causes of neck pain is crucial for effective management and relief. Neck pain is one of the most common areas of complaint for my patients these days. We are all walking around on our phones looking down at our devices or working on a computer and leaning into that screen.  You’re probably doing it right now as you read this email.

Here’s a quick guide to help you identify the most likely cause of your neck pain (You can have more than one cause, in fact most people do):

  1. Poor Posture: Extended periods of sitting or looking down at screens can strain your neck muscles. Do you sit with your head poking forward and not stacked somewhat over your shoulders?
  2. Injury: Trauma from accidents or falls can lead to persistent neck discomfort. Have you been playing a sport and fell to the ground? Been in a car accident or roller coaster that tossed your head forward and back, side to side?
  3. Muscle Strain: Overuse or sudden movements may cause muscle strain and stiffness. Do you work with your hands above your head looking up or down for prolonged periods of time? Mechanics, construction workers and electricians usually fit into this category.
  4. Herniated Disc: Discs in the spine can bulge and press on nerves, causing pain. Do you wake up with a stiff neck most days that takes at least 10 mins to loosen up? Do you have pain that seems to move around all on the same side? One day you wake up with pain in the shoulder blade, the next day it’s the arm or elbow.
  5. Degenerative Disc Disease: Age-related changes in spinal discs can lead to chronic neck pain. Have you lost range of motion in your neck and it’s difficult to turn? Are you over the age of 50?

Tip: Practice good posture by aligning your ears with your shoulders and keeping your screen at eye level to reduce strain.
