If you’ve been experiencing hip pain for months on end and treatments focused on the hips don’t seem to be long lasting, then your hips may not be the source of the pain.
In a popular EXPOSSS article, Rossdale and others found that up to 71% of people experiencing hip pain were coming from a spinal source. Only 9% of the people with hip issues actually had pain being generated from the hip itself.

So how does this happen? Well, the nerves in our low back exit our spine and then feed into muscles, joints, skin etc. The nerves are the electrical system for our body so if something is irritating the nerve in the low back then it can wreak havoc in multiple areas. One of the most common areas being the hips.

This can present as pain along the side of the hip, tightness in the hip flexors or hamstrings or a deep pain around the butt muscles that you can’t seem to stretch out or reach. This tightness in turn causes more pulling into the low back and keeps you in a pain loop that will only be broken when you get to the true source of the pain.
