As some of you know I am a certified fan of DNS exercises (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stability) that focus on building true core strength. This is because having core stability not only helps protect our spine and discs over time but also creates a strong foundation from which the rest of our body can move.
If our core is stable and strong then odds are you are moving through life with a more upright posture. The core is the base from which our mid back and shoulders move. If we are hunched forward and slouching this physically changes the angle of the shoulder blade and then affects how far up we can reach.
Here’s a photo to help illustrate this concept. Note the angle of the shoulder blade.

If you want to test it out yourself. Sit up as straight as you can and see how far you can reach up. Next, exaggerate a slouched posture allowing your mid back to round and hunch forward, then reach up again. It’s impossible to get the same amount of range right! That’s because the mid back affects the placement of your shoulder blade and limits how far your arm can reach. This is why I always like to focus on core strength and mid back mobility with all of my patients who are experiencing shoulder pain.
